Matouš Háša

Matouš Háša (*1992) is a leading sculptor of the younger generation, who understands classical form as a living language capable of interpreting the world around us. In his work, he builds on the tradition of European figurative sculpture, which he reshapes in reflection of contemporary identity and social reality. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague: Studio of Figurative Sculpture and Medals under the guidance of Vojtěch Míča. He completed study stays in Florence (Libera Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze) and London (Middlesex University London). In his work, he draws from the roots of Western culture, which he translates into a psychoanalytic portrait of the postmodern human. He reshapes his sculptures with contemporary visual elements, thereby challenging their classical form, which becomes unsettling. His works, stripped of context and interpretation, are, thanks to the combination of inspiration from classical sculpture (e.g., Michelangelo, Rodin) and contemporary figurative artists (e.g., Marc Quinn, Banksy), a formal continuation of the tradition of Western sculpture.
