Jan Kaláb
Jan Kaláb (b. 1978) is a legend of the Czech graffiti scene and a prominent figure in contemporary abstract art. He has established himself on the international art scene through his distinctive blending of street art and graffiti experience with an academic background in drawing, sculpture, and architecture. It is precisely the tension between spontaneous gesture, construction, and precisely defined form that has become one of the defining features of his work. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, Kaláb has developed a visual language over the course of his career that sits at the intersection of painting, drawing, and object-based art. Dynamic composition and captivating color play the most crucial role in his geometrically abstract paintings, through which he strives to capture the infinity of the universe.
Drawing his motifs from the realm of the microcosm and cellular forms, his purely abstract shapes implicitly reference the simplicity of the world’s basic elements. The painter’s brilliant technique unites a seamless interplay between dynamic contours and the intense color of the filled areas. In recent years, he has also been exploring the spatial possibilities of painting, pushing his compositions beyond the limits of the traditional hanging format.
Jan Kaláb regularly exhibits both in the Czech Republic and abroad, including in major global hubs such as London, Rome, Berlin, Miami, New York, and Los Angeles. His work is represented in significant institutional and private collections.
