This series of limited-edition pigment prints captures unique moments from Marina Abramović’s video works. The titles Red Period and Blue Period consciously reference Matisse’s use of red and Picasso’s Blue Period, in which colour played a significant role. Abramović, however, takes these historical references in her own direction, transforming monochromatic colour into a space for exploring emotion and the body.
In Red Period, Abramović appears in close-up, bathed in red light. Her expression oscillates between a seductive gesture and a confrontational gaze. Here, red evokes energy and vitality, but also femininity, seduction, and the anonymity associated with the red lights of the sex industry.
Blue Period, by contrast, works with blue as a symbol of coldness, melancholy, and isolation. Accompanied by repetitive pop music, Abramović obsessively bites her fingernails, her expression oscillating between apathetic detachment and intense suffering. Blue thus becomes a means of exploring vulnerability and the boundaries of the body and psyche.
Each print is hand-signed by the artist on the reverse. The series was presented as part of Marina Abramović’s exhibition at Saatchi Yates gallery in London in 2025.
